šŸž Organic Gardening Jobs in March šŸŒ±

It’s really ramping up for us this month. The weeds are sprouting & we’ve got the pruning shears out! Here is what we’re up to in your gardens this month…

🌳Spring Pruning 🌳

Buddleia and Elder can be pruned hard this month. We often prune buddleia to the ground to convince it to grow back bushy instead of leggy. Or, you can leave a framework of older branches & prune around them to get more of a tree. Be bold & have fun! Pruning is as much art as it is science, & these are very forgiving plants to practice on.

This is also the time to prune your dogwoods to get lots of vibrant red stems growing for next winter – that’s them in the left of the photo.

🌹Feed The Roses 🌹

We put slow release fertiliser like chicken poo around the base of roses, peonies & any other herbaceous perennials that are going to flower like mad this year. This sets them up with plenty of healthy green growth to support all those blooms. You can put some plant supports in while you’re at it – Peonies looks much better if they grow through the supports than if you let them flop & try to prop them up later.

🌸Mow The Wildflower Patch 🌸

New wildflowers will be trying to get started with the warmer weather. Chopping down last year’s stems allows light in to let the new shoots grow up strong. We always leave stems on over winter to provide habitat for local wildlife, but now the weather is warming up they’ll be coming out of hibernation & looking for food.
