Garden Design – How It Works

There are three steps to designing the perfect garden:

  • Consultation, surveying and creating a base plan
  • The concept plan – a colour, scale design of the proposed design
  • Final design – a technical plan with planting lists and everything needed to create the garden.

Each step is billed for separately, which helps to spread the cost, and at each phase we will set a timeline so you know when to expect the next installment.

If you’re interested in border design, the process is much simpler. We will measure the space to be planted up, and skip the concept plan, instead creating just a planting plan.

Full design packages start from £3,500, but the overall cost depends on the size and complexity of your garden. We will give you a quote for each phase in advance.

Survey and Base Plan

The first step in any design is to meet with you and talk about your dreams for your garden. We’ll cover everything you want to include from vegetable growing to providing habitat. We take in to consideration how you like to use the garden, as well as the maintenance requirements of the finished design.

From there, we’ll take a complete survey of the garden, carefully measuring every aspect and producing a scale drawing. If the topography is complex we may also create a 3d rendering, or request a professional surveyor to come and measure for us.

Concept Plan

With our measurements in hand, we then go away and create a full colour, hand drawn concept plan. This is a scale plan of how we think we can fit all the elements you need to create a harmonious garden. It doesn’t detail every single plant yet, it’s an overall concept that we can talk over to make sure you’re happy before moving on to the final design. We may also create mood boards or sketches to help you envision the finished garden.

We will also discuss with you how the design is going to be realised. If you want to include built structures such as a pergola or greenhouse, we have contractors that we recommend to ensure things run smoothly. If the design is mainly planting, or you have opted for a border design, we can carry out all the work ourselves, or hand over the final design for you to work on yourself.

Any amendments can be made at this stage, one round of amendments is included in the quote.

Final Design

The big day! We will meet with you to present the final design. This will include the overall design, a planting plan and technical drawings for any structures.
